AYURVEDA
Ayurveda "the science of life”
is a system of holistic health care which evolved on the
Indian subcontinent about 5000 years ago, established by
sages who introduced the original system of meditation and
yoga. Mankind's most ancient surviving medical heritage,
Ayurveda, is a science of natural laws, understood and applied
to explain the entire phenomenon of life and the universe.
Every field of modern medicine as well as every alternative
system of health care that works does so because of these
natural laws, expounded in detail by Ayurveda.
Ayurveda surpasses all modern health care systems
in its range of therapeutic modalities. The main objective
of the Ayurvedic system is to restore and maintain the equilibrium
of body, mind and soul, and was officially recognized by
the "World Health Organization" in 1976
.
True health is not just the absence of physical ailments.
Ayurveda teaches that humans consist of three aspects: the
physical, the subtle and the causal, or body, mind and soul
in common parlance. Health, according to Ayurveda is a balanced
expression of all these three elements. This unique holistic
and integrated approach to health is one of the main features
of Ayurveda. For this reason it's especially relevant in
today's stress-filled world.
There are several aspects to Ayurveda that are quite unique:
It accepts the concept that the cell is the fundamental
unit, governing relatively independent biological activities
(Caraka, sarira sthanam). Thus the cell can be seen as the
collective denominator of all living matter. Even though
cells have numerous functions, it is possible to reduce
them to three groups.
Motion- the correlative and communicative power by which
one part of the body can influence another part and through
which either the whole body or parts of the body can be
set in motion (bio-energy vata).
Conversion - the substantive and metabolic power that is
responsible for bio-chemical changes (bio-energy pitta).
Design- the nourishing and preserving powers that protect
the human organism and its reproduction (bio-energy kapha).
Ayurveda is a lifestyle, not one food, herb, or activity.
It is an affordable, accessible daily practice for creating
health and harmony in the body and in the environment. Once
we begin to incorporate these principles in our daily activities,
the positive benefits are evident in every aspect of our
life. When this brings clarity and sense of well being at
the deepest level, we are living Ayurveda.
